Shia Islam (from the Arabic phrase Shi'at Ali, meaning the partisans or followers of Ali ibn Abi Talib) constitutes the second-largest branch of Islam, representing between 15% and 20% of the world's 1.9 billion Muslims. Rooted directly in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), Shia Muslims believe that divine guidance did not terminate with the Prophet's passing, but continued through twelve divinely appointed Infallible Imams from the Prophet's purified household (Ahlulbayt).
1. The Meaning and Quranic Usage of "Shi'a"
The word Shi'a is not a sectarian label coined centuries later; it is an honorable Quranic term denoting loyal adherents to righteous leadership. In Surah As-Saffat (37:83), Allah states:
“And indeed, of his (Noah's) Shi'a (followers in faith) was Abraham.” (37:83)
Furthermore, in numerous authentic prophetic traditions recorded by both Shia and Sunni traditionists (such as Ibn Hajar in Al-Sawa'iq al-Muhriqah and Al-Suyuti in Al-Durr al-Manthur), the Prophet pointed to Ali ibn Abi Talib and stated: “By Him in whose hand is my life, this man and his Shi'a (followers) shall be the successful ones on the Day of Resurrection.”
2. The 5 Roots of Religion (Usool al-Deen)
In Shia theology, faith is grounded in intellect ('Aql). Blind imitation (Taqlid) is strictly forbidden in fundamental beliefs; every Muslim must understand these five principles rationally:
- Tawheed (Divine Unity): Absolute, indivisible Oneness of Allah. He has no body, no physical form, no partners, and no equal.
- Adl (Divine Justice): Allah is inherently Just; He never acts unjustly or compels human beings to sin and then punishes them for it (rejection of absolute predestination).
- Nabuwwah (Prophethood): Allah dispatched 124,000 infallible prophets to guide humanity, culminating with the final and universal Prophet, Muhammad al-Mustafa (S.A.W).
- Imamah (Divine Leadership): The appointment of twelve purified, infallible spiritual and temporal leaders from the Ahlulbayt, beginning with Imam Ali (A.S) and culminating with Imam al-Mahdi (A.J.T.F).
- Qiyamah (Day of Judgment & Resurrection): Physical resurrection of all humanity for divine accountability, reward in Paradise, or punishment in Hell.
3. The 10 Branches of Practice (Furoo al-Deen)
While the Roots represent internal belief, the Branches govern religious duty and moral action:
- Salat: The five mandatory daily prayers.
- Sawm: Fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
- Hajj: Pilgrimage to the Holy Ka'bah in Mecca for those with financial and physical means.
- Zakat: Wealth purification tax for the impoverished.
- Khums: Annual 20% Islamic tax on surplus income to support religion, orphans, and needy descendants of the Prophet.
- Jihad: Moral struggle against inner evil (Jihad al-Nafs) and legitimate defense of human life and freedom against aggression.
- Amr bil-Ma'roof: Lovingly encouraging virtue and justice in society.
- Nahy anil-Munkar: Forbidding evil, oppression, and corruption.
- Tawalla: Actively loving and adhering to Allah, the Prophet, and the Ahlulbayt.
- Tabarra: Spiritual disassociation from tyrants, oppressors, and the enemies of truth and justice.
4. The Event of Ghadir Khumm & Hadith al-Thaqalayn
On the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the 10th year of the Hijrah, after completing the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada), the Prophet halted over 100,000 companions at the pool of Ghadir Khumm under the scorching desert sun. Raising the arm of Imam Ali (A.S), he delivered the historic proclamation:
“Whosoever's Master (Mawla) I am, this Ali is his Master. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and oppose whoever opposes him!”
Immediately following this declaration, Allah revealed: “This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:3).
5. Sacred Scriptures & Literary Heritage
The bedrock text of Shia Islam is the Holy Quran—without a single letter added, removed, or changed. Complementing the Quran is the profound literary heritage of the Ahlulbayt:
- The Holy Quran: The eternal, unaltered word of Allah (S.W.T).
- Nahjul Balaghah: Sermons, letters, and wisdom of Imam Ali (A.S) compiled by Sayyid al-Razi.
- Al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah: Known as the Psalms of Islam, intimate prayers of Imam Zayn al-Abideen (A.S).
- Al-Kafi: The monumental 8-volume Hadith compendium compiled by Sheikh al-Kulayni in the 10th century.
